What professional whitening is
Professional whitening lightens teeth with peroxide gels at strengths you will not find on a drugstore shelf, used under a dentist's supervision. In-office treatment applies a higher-strength gel in carefully timed passes, with your gums protected throughout, and brightens teeth noticeably in about an hour. Custom take-home trays, made from precise impressions of your teeth, hold the gel evenly against the enamel; worn as directed over one to two weeks, they lighten more gradually and let you fine-tune the final shade.
When you might consider it
Most discoloration is extrinsic — surface staining from coffee, tea, red wine, tobacco, and time — and it responds well to either approach. Intrinsic staining lives within the tooth itself: tetracycline antibiotics taken in childhood, excess fluoride during development, or an old injury can darken a tooth from the inside. These deeper stains lighten more slowly, often calling for extended take-home treatment, and in stubborn cases bonding or veneers may serve you better. Whitening will not change the color of crowns or fillings, either — another reason a careful evaluation comes first.
What to expect at your visit
Whitening begins with an examination, not a gel. Dr. Sorina Ratchford, a member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, first confirms that your teeth and gums are healthy — decay or inflammation should be treated before bleaching — and identifies what is causing the discoloration. We record your starting shade and talk through which approach suits your teeth, your sensitivity, and your timeline. In-office treatment is completed in a single comfortable appointment; for take-home whitening, we take impressions, fit your custom trays, and send you home with professional gel and clear instructions.
Aftercare and how long it lasts
Mild sensitivity to cold for a day or two is common and fades on its own; a desensitizing toothpaste helps, and take-home treatment can be paced more gently. For the first forty-eight hours, keep deeply colored foods and drinks — coffee, tea, red wine, berries — to a minimum while the enamel settles. After that, longevity is largely a matter of habit. Many patients stay brighter for a year or more, touch-ups in your custom trays renew the shade easily, and regular cleanings at our Morro Bay office protect the result.
Paying for whitening
Because whitening is considered cosmetic, most dental insurance plans do not cover it, though the examination and cleaning that come first often are. We would rather you know where you stand before you begin, so our front office will review your plan, explain what it contributes, and give you a clear picture of each option. Patients visit us from Los Osos, Cayucos, and across the Central Coast; wherever you are coming from, call (805) 772-8585 and we will find a time to talk.
